Model airplane competition at the old Ottumwa Municipal Airport on North Court Road, in the late 1930s. One of the boys flying home-built models was Bob Mikesh, who later built model airplanes used to assist cadets at the Naval Air Station Ottumwa in identifying various crafts. Personnel at the Naval Air Station often ordered souvenir models which Mikesh built for them, including a Stearman Kaydet ordered by Richard M. Nixon, later United States President Nixon, who served at NAS Ottumwa in 1942 and 1943.
