L.E. Gray, a Wapello County sheriff, drilled an artesian well on Vernon Avenue one block north of Main Street and built this hotel in 1880. Trains brought guests to drink and bathe in the spring water, which contained sulfates of magnesia and iron. The water was used to treat patients suffering from rheumatism and stomach problems. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1892 For more information on the Michael Lemberger Collection visit https://aspace.lib.uiowa.edu/repositories/2/resources/3157
